Music, song and sports to mark Olympic handover - FREE city centre event. 1pm to 5.30pm. on Sunday 24 August.

Songs, music and sports will come together in a major event in Manchester to mark the end of the Beijing Olympics and the handover to London in preparation for the 2012 Games.

A 100-strongSing Manchester choir will join with 24 other cities across the country in a massiveSing the Nation event to create the UK’s biggest singalong as the Games finale and handover is broadcast on big outdoor screens on Sunday 24 August.

Manchester's own orchestra, the Hallé, who are currently celebrating their 150th anniversary, will perform a free outdoor concert featuring some favourite classics and there will be demonstrations of Olympic sports and the chance to have a go yourself.

Each city will sing a regional song led by a community choir. Manchester’s song will be How Deep Is Your Love by the city’s famous sons the Bee Gees, who grew up in Chorlton.

Then all 25 cities will sing together a new national song composed by Mike Brewer OBE, Director of the National Youth Choir, which promises a mix of elements of ancient English folk song with Monty Python. The words will be shown on the big screens so that everyone there can join in and sing along.

The choir and public singalong and the Hallé concert will take place in Albert Square, outside Manchester Town Hall. The sports demonstrations and chances to have a go will be in Exchange Square, outside the Triangle Shopping Centre.

The Manchester choir will be led by Jeff Borradaile, who teaches choral singing throughout the North West. It will be made up of members of the Manchester Lesbian and Gay Chorus, the Ordsall Acapella Singers, Salford, the Blackburn People’s Choir and the Galloways Society for the Blind Choir from Preston and Morecambe.

An Olympic Handover Flag will be raised at Manchester Town Hall simultaneously with regions around the UK to celebrate the moment when London becomes the official Olympic Games host city.

A variety of sports led by Manchester Leisure’s Sports Development Team will also be on show, including group exhibitions and come-and-try activities. Cheerleaders, cyclists and athletes will encourage people to get involved and join the Olympic buzz.

Coverage of the Olympic handover ceremony will be shown on big screens in both squares. From 3.45pm in Exchange Square you can also watch the London 2012 Party concert live on the Big Screen.

Both events run from 1pm to 5.30pm.

“The city centre event will be an enjoyable way for all the family to mark the handover of the Games in preparation for the London Olympics in four years’ time,” said Councillor Mike Amesbury, Manchester City Council’s Executive Member for Culture and Leisure.

“Sing Manchester is a great chance for local people to come along and join in the singing, even if you think you can’t sing, and the chance to hear the Hallé free is not to be missed. Combined with the chance to see and try out Olympic sports, it all adds up to a great day out.”

The Chairman of the London 2012 Organising Committee, Sebastian Coe, said: ‘When the Mayor of London accepts the Olympic Flag on 24th August, the eyes of the world will turn to London and the UK as the next Summer Host City.

“It is a very important and exciting moment for us, and we want as many people as possible to join in the Handover celebrations. We are delighted that so many local authorities share our excitement and are proudly displaying the Olympic Handover Flag to mark this very special moment on our journey to 2012.”

Councillor Chris White, Chair of the LGA’s Culture, Tourism and Sport board, said:

“While the Olympic Games in 2012 are happening in London, it’s clear there’s strong support for them throughout the length and breadth of the country. More than 400 councils have arranged parties and flag-raising events for August 24th to mark the start of an exciting four years.

“Authorities are already investing in sports facilities and promoting healthier living to ensure the legacy of the Olympic Games will be long-lasting. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for every part of the country to enjoy a boom in business, tourism and sporting excellence, and councils are ready to seize the opportunity.”

Limited seating will be available in Albert Square for the Hallé concert but the organisers suggest that visitors should take their own chairs. Food and drink will be available or you could take your own but not in glass containers.

For grow your own vegetable workshops, a gardener’s surgery offering advice for ailing plants and a selection of flowers straight from major shows such as RHS Tatton and Hampton Court, Heaton Park is the place to be this weekend.

To improve horticultural facilities and services in North Manchester, the Earl of Wilton’s former kitchen garden at Heaton Park has been brought back into use and will be hosting the park’s first Summer Plant and Cacti Fair on Sunday 17 August.

Offering gardeners of all levels the opportunity to hone their skills, learn more about the plants they are growing and purchase a huge selection of exciting and colourful plants at a fraction of the usual retail cost, the Summer Plant and Cacti Fair, organised by garden event specialists, Flower Power, looks set to be a big hit.

Councillor Rosa Battle, Assistant Executive Member for Culture and Leisure at Manchester City Council said: “The re-opening of the walled garden at Heaton Park is great news for North Manchester. Our research indicated that there was a strong need for a garden centre facility in the area and Heaton Hall’s former kitchen garden was an ideal choice.”

Herbie to stop at Parkfield Dance Centre...

Herbie is a mobile greengrocer which operates in North and East Manchester, in areas where there is little fresh produce sold in shops.

Thanks to the efforts of Shirley McCardell from Zest and the Moston Health Forum, come July, Herbie will be selling affordable fresh fruit and vegetables to New Moston residents.

Herbie already sells a good selection of fresh and affordable fruit and vegetables in a number of locations, and is looking forward to serving the NEPHRA's Tuesday luncheon club at Parkfield Dance Centre when a new timetable begins in July.

This new location will enable luncheon club members and local residents to buy affordable fruit and vegetables in portions which suit individual needs.

Herbie has been delivering fruit to the Dance Centre for a number of months, and this has been enjoyed by the people who attend the Zest classes at the centre.

Herbie is run by the sustainable development charity MERCi, and is a key contributor to Manchester's Food Futures Strategy.

The strategy has improving access to healthy, affordable food as a key priority. For more information about the Herbie project and up to date information about stops, please email herbie@merci.org.uk or contact MERCi on 0161 273 1736 and ask to speak to someone in the Herbie tea

Bogus Caller Alert.

Be on your toes Bogus Callers are operating in our area.

Please inform vulnerable family members, freinds and neighbours.

Bogus Caller Advice

Most people who knock on your door will be genuine callers. However you can not always be sure, so it is important to take some precautions before opening the door.

What is a bogus caller?

A ‘Bogus Caller’, also known as a ‘Distraction Burglar’ is someone who calls at your home unannounced, to trick, distract or lie with the intention of stealing money or valuables from your home.

Safety tips

The incidences of distraction burglary are low, but by always following these steps you can ensure you are able to confidently deal with unsolicited callers.

Stop: Think if you are expecting anyone. Check that the back door is locked and take the key out. Look through the spy-hole or the window to see who it is.

Chain: If you decide to open the door, put the door chain or bar on first. Keep the bar or chain on while you are talking to the person on the doorstep. (Normally, when the door is shut and locked, leave the bar or chain off in case you need to get out in an emergency.)

Check: Ask for and take the time to check their identity card. Call the company they say they are from using the phone directory. Don’t call the number on the ID card as it may be fake.

Be extra careful with callers who:

Say they need help urgently

Ask you to step outside

Want to come in

Ask to make a phone call

Want to use your toilet

Ask for a glass of water

Only go to help if you have someone else with you. Don’t worry if you decide not to help – it is not rude or unfriendly.

Do's and Don’ts:

Bogus callers may turn up as and offer to do repairs or sell you something.

Do ask friends or relatives to recommend builders or gardeners they have used before

Do get quotes from two or three companies if you think work needs to be done in your home

Don't keep large sums of money in the house, use a bank or building society.

Do report bogus callers. If you think a bogus caller has called at your door, report it to the police immediately.

For mor information see the attached poster.

Launch of New Bowel Cancer Screening Programme in North Manchester.

Invitations to take part in the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme are now being sent out to men and women in North Manchester. Manchester PCT is introducing the screening programme to help detect bowel cancer at an early stage, so that early treatment can be administered to help save lives!

Early detection is important to help lower the number of deaths from bowel cancer. This is currently the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the UK. This screening programme could help reduce deaths from bowel cancer by 16 per cent in those invited for screening.

Men and women aged between 60 and 69 who are registered with a GP in North Mancheste,r will be invited to take part in the the bowel cancer screening programme on their next even numbered birthday.

So those of you who will be 60, 62, 64, 66 & 68 this year will be invited for screening on your birthday this year. and those of you having and odd birthday this year (61, 63, 65, 67,) will be invited to take the test on your birhday next year. At the moment it's unclear when 69 year olds will be invited to join the screening but Nephra will seek clarification on this and update this article.

A leaflet entitled ‘Bowel Cancer Screening – The Facts’ will be sent to everyone with their invitation to help them make an informed choice about whether or not to take up the opportunity of screening.

This leaflet explains bowel screening and the benefits and limitations of the test. Step-by-step instructions for completing the test at home are being sent out with the test kit and further support is available from the freephone helpline on 0800 707 60 60.

The test involves collecting a small sample from three separate bowel motions - this can easilly be achieved with the minimum of fuss, by placing a large paper plate inside the toilet bowel, then by using a specially designed spatula a sample can be taken and popped into the prepaid envelope. Once you have taken a sample from three seperate bowel motions, the envelope can then be returned to the laboratory for analysis.

The test does not diagnose bowel cancer but gives an indication as to whether further investigations are required. An abnormal test result can occur for a variety of reasons including piles (haemorrhoids) or stomach ulcers. Those people who require further investigation will be referred to a specialist screening nurse-led clinic where the option of a colonoscopy will be discussed.

All men and women aged over 60 are eligible for screening every two years. Those aged 60 to 69, and registered with a GP, will be automatically invited and will receive an test kit. Those aged 70 and over are strongly encouraged to request a test kit by calling the freephone helpline on 0800 707 6060.

Further information on the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme is available from www.cancerscreening.nhs.uk.

Free Choice For All Launch of New Hospital Services Scheme

The Free Choice initiative means that most patients referred by their GP to see a specialist, will be able to opt for any hospital in the country which meets NHS standards.

It’s hoped
