New Moston's Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team

Safer Neighbourhoods Teams

Safer Neighbourhoods is about a return to local policing for Manchester. Each team is made up of dedicated police and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs). Their aim is to listen and talk to you, and find out what affects your daily life and feelings of security. These might be issues such as antisocial behaviour, graffiti, noisy neighbourhoods or vandalism. Then, they work in partnership with you and other agencies to find a lasting solution.

Safer Neighbourhoods teams are dedicated to your community and are additional to other policing teams and units in Manchester. If you have concerns about day-to-day crime and disorder issues, or if you would like to get involved, please contact your local Community Safety Co-ordinator.  New Moston’s Safer Neighbourhood Team is based at Moston & Harpurhey Police Station.

New Moston Beatsweep March 18th 08

Beatsweeps are part of Manchester City Council's 100 Days Challenge 2008 to a greener, cleaner city.

On Tuesday march 18th a Beatswweep was undertaken in and around New Moston. A number of agencies took part to provide information and advice to residents and businesses on crime and community safety.

In addition, on the day, enforcement action on issues such as litter, flytipping, dog fouling, graffiti, illegal parking and untaxed vehicles was taken.

Outcomes - Moston Beatsweep 2008

Moston Beatsweep is part of Manchester City Council’s 100 Days Challenge to a cleaner and greener city.

This year, Moston Beatsweep took place on 18 March

Over 70 staff from 11 agencies took part in the day. Agencies involved included Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, Northwards Housing and Neighbourhood wardens and Adactus Housing Association. Manchester City Council services represented included Private Sector Housing Team, Street Environment Manager, CCTV, Traffic Wardens, Housing Support Services for Older People and the Youth Contact Team.

Results from the day

One of the big news items was the launch of GMP’s “Small favour: Big fine” campaign which aims to increase awareness to the problems of proxy sales of alcohol by adults to young people. The launch also promoted the A4 Off licence Forum in Moston and Harpurhey wards that has been in place since September 2007. The aim of the forum is to work with off licenses to address concerns about crime and anti-social behaviour.

Following the launch, off license owners will be given two-way radios to help improve communication between premises and report any concerns or incidents to the police and each other.

The Private Sector Housing Team organised a Community Action Day in the New Moston area. Staff leafleted 291 properties prior to the Beatsweep to inform residents that they would be in the area. The aim of the Community Action Day was to find out more about how residents feel about living in the New Moston area, what concerns they had and give them on advice and information on local services is available. Overall, 84 residents spoke to staff about local services in their area and the general feedback was very positive from residents that this type of event was being held in their area.

There were high visibility patrols in Moston and New Moston area by police and wardens.

There were 4 arrests made and a further 2 enquiries were carried out on known offenders in the area.

The crime prevention van was situated at Parkfield Dance Centre in New Moston giving advice to residents on home and personal safety.   Light timers, personal alarms and door chains and mirrors were just some of the free items given to residents.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service leafleted over 300 properties in the New Moston area to promote the importance of having a smoke alarm and increase awareness of the risks of leaving wheelie bins out. Fire officers also gave a fire safety

presentation at the Parkfield Dance Centre Luncheon club and took referrals from residents to carry out a home fire risk assessment.

Street Environment Officers took 18 actions away on the day for various environmental issues including 2 cases of flyposting as well as investigations into graffiti and damage at Carters Field.

Neighbourhood wardens were also very busy on the day reporting 5 locations where rubbish had been dumped in the Bluestone Road, Millais Street, Romney Street, Wilfred Street areas.10 young people were stopped for not being in school. 4 cars were identified as not having tax or insurance, which resulted in 3 of the vehicles being taken off the streets.

Police and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) joined patrols with Northwards Housing team by visiting 35 properties in the New Moston area. Housing officers visited the area to check on tenancy matters including inspections of gardens and repairs to properties as well as providing re-assurance visits to tenants who had reported anti-social behaviour in the neighbourhood.

Adactus Housing Association visited 8 properties in the Moston area and is taking tenancy enforcement action against 3 addresses.

Youth Contact Team visited the Moston Lane area to check on areas where there had been reports of anti-social behaviour and nuisance. No problems were reported on the day but the team will continue to visit the areas near to St Joseph’s cemetery to speak to any young people on organised sports and leisure activities available.

Inspector Jacobs said . “I am very pleased with the hard work by everyone involved on this day of action. Beatsweeps are an effective tool to address crime and fear of crime in our communities in a positive way. We will continue to do more of this type of work and are keen to listen to residents on how we can make further improvements.”

And the beat goes on….

We’re continuing to work with local communities as part of the 100 Days Challenge 2008 and will support residents with events they want to plan to make their area safe, cleaner and greener. To fin out more and get involved, phone 0161 954 9005 or check the website: www.challengemanchester.co.uk
