Welcome to the NEPHRA Website
NEPHRA Residents Association is based in New Moston, Manchester which is part of the Moston Ward. The first question many people ask is.... "What does NEPHRA mean?". It surprises many, to discover the name was just made up in a hurrry, from the initials of some of the streets we represent!
The N comes from Northfield Road, the E from Elder Grove, the P from Parkfield Road North and the R and A stand for Residents Association. {For more information on the areas now covered by NEPHRA see the attached Map).
So from humble beginnings in 2004, when a handful of local people got together to clear up a local grot spot, NEPHRA now boasts a membership of over 1000 homes, and is run by a committee of local people supported by volunteers of all ages and backgrounds.
The overall aims of NEPHRA came out of our first project, when small group of residents, got together to clear up the local grot spot. It was a huge task which necessitated the group working together from the May Bank holiday weekend, through the summer and into the New Year and beyond.
Although this project was ultimately abandoned - the land was bought literally from under our feet (by a local business man, for £1. Sadly, the land still remains the same grot spot today). We had though, learnt many useful lessons along the way:
- Until we had the common goal of clearing up the land. many of us who had been close neighbours for years, had never spoken to each other.
- Working together was fun and gave us good feelings of satisfaction.
- Improving the environment also made us feel better.
- New Moston had no identity especially at the city council, and needed putting firmly on the map as an integral part of the Moston Ward.
- Officers from the city council, local councillors and other agency staff are there to help, and are more than willing to do so.
From these experiences then, we were able to develop our overall aims for our residents group.
NEPHRA's Aims
- To improve the quality of life of residents.
- To recreate the long-gone community spirit of yesteryear.
- To establish New Moston as a Garden Village.
This is being achieved by:
- Providing a voice for local concerns and for people whose views may not always be heard.
- Working with individuals/groups to resolve problems which affect our lives.
- Delivering local services to local people.
- Providing ways of engaging people to become active in their community.
- Providing a strong local network of people and organisations that work together and support each other.
- Building relationships and partnerships with appropriate agencies, organisations, local councillors, officers from the city council and other relevant groups.
- Working democratically whilst remaining independent and politically neutral.
- Providing regular information to and by regularly consulting all residents.
- Providing information and opportunities to help all residents, lead a more active and healthier lifestyle.
Whilst working with residents NEPHRA will:
- Work with residents and the wider community to ensure that the services we provide are responsive to their needs.
- Work to promote involvement and consult with residents and other groups to ensure an understanding of the quality and range of services that are required.
- Understand and respect the broad range of qualities which characterise New Moston residents, which includes race, religion, culture, nationality, ethnic background, colour, disability, sex, sexuality, age, literacy and income level.
- Recognise the differing needs of residents, in particular residents living in isolation or difficult to reach groups such as parents with young children, or older people living alone.
